We recently announced Charlotta Harpur’s promotion to Associate Director and are now delighted to share more about her impressive career and how she can help you.

Charlotta is a seasoned specialist civil litigation and dispute resolution solicitor, with over 15 years of experience assisting councils in resolving disputes.  Her extensive knowledge of council functions under the Building Act and all aspects of building-related disputes and civil procedures, has made her an integral part of Rice Speir and a sought-after contact for our clients.

Charlotta’s in-depth knowledge of building defect and weathertightness claims is recognised within the industry, with Charlotta’s regularly speaking at BOINZ events and councils across the country.

Charlotta has had multiple significant success in and out of Court for our council clients in the past year.  These include:

Woolley v Marlborough District Council [2023] NZHC 3840: Successful opposition to plaintiff’s application to cross-examine council staff for further discovery and challenge to litigation privilege;

Woolley v Marlborough District Council [2024] NZHC 1647: Successful opposition to plaintiff’s application for discovery of metadata of documents;

Hobday v Selwyn District Council [2024] NZHC 550: Successful opposition to plaintiffs’ application for extension of time to serve the Council, and strike out of claim against Council;

Tasman District Council v Buchanan [2024] NZCA 133: successful Court of Appeal finding of no duty of care by Council when inspecting pools to avoid economic loss to owners.
